In this video, kids will learn directly from a currently registered dental hygienist about some of the best ways they can take care of their teeth and mouth. Establishing a good oral hygiene routine when you’re young, like brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist, can help you avoid problems like cavities later on.
Because oral health begins from birth, parents should make sure to wipe their baby’s mouth after feedings as the buildup of sugar from milk can cause a condition called thrush. At around the six month mark, babies develop their first teeth that should be cleaned gently with little finger brushes or a baby toothbrush. Children should be assisted with teeth brushing until the age of six or seven. Be aware of what they eat throughout the day to maintain a healthy diet, but also so that they can be quick to clean the unhealthy items they consume out of their teeth. Make sure that they don’t eat sugary foods throughout the day and encourage moderation. It’s also important at this age to establish a routine with flossing so that they continue the habit throughout their life. Watch as the dental hygienist demonstrates flossing with a fake mouth craft and some floss.
