Taking Great Care of Animals’ Teeth | Dental Worksheet
Sept. 22
Just like with humans, animals have dental health needs. In order for your pets to thrive, you need to take care of their mouths. Use this dental worksheet to learn how common pets need to have their teeth cared for and review what you can do to take care of your own.
Dogs have their teeth brushed with a special toothpaste just for dogs. They also have treats and toys to help clean their teeth, just like humans do with crunchy foods. While dentists clean human teeth, veterinarians clean animal teeth. Alternatively, rabbits don’t have to get their teeth brushed, but they do wear down their fast growing teeth with the food they eat. Their teeth get checked to make sure they are growing properly.
Turtles don’t have teeth, but they still need to keep their mouths clean. They need to eat fruits, vegetables, meat and water or they might develop “mouth rot.” Like rabbits, hamster teeth don’t stop growing, so it’s important that they have wooden toys to chew on to ensure they don’t grow too long. If their teeth get too long, hamsters can have trouble eating.
Like dogs, cats need special, non-human toothpaste, and they need to have their teeth checked at the vet. Fish have teeth in the back of their mouths that you can’t brush, and they grow back when lost. Keep their teeth clean by feeding them properly.
