Inside Every Tooth

Here are some hand guides and worksheets to download and explore at home, or in the classroom! My friend, Tooth, gives you a closer look to what’s inside every tooth. Discover that each tooth consists of a crown, enamel, dentin, pulp, nerves and blood vessels, roots, and cementum.

The sheet details the function of each part of the tooth. The crown is the part of the tooth that you can see above your gums, and the crown of the tooth is covered in enamel, which is a hard substance that helps you bite and chew. Pulp is the soft material that resides inside your tooth, and the layer between the pulp and enamel is called the dentin. Inside the pulp are nerves and blood vessels, and their job is to bring minerals and vitamins to your teeth in order to keep them healthy. The root is the largest part of your tooth and it resides underneath your gums. You’re unable to see it, but the root helps to keep your tooth planted in your mouth. The root is covered in a bone-like material called cementum. Use this sheet and the discussion questions provided to be knowledgeable about your teeth and understand your dental health.

Let’s check out a day in the life of a tooth. Charlie Canine walks us through his day while he hangs out in the mouth of 10-year-old Cooper. The graphic details the things that Cooper consumes and how it impacts his teeth, like the calcium in milk making the tooth stronger, while gummy worms getting stuck in his teeth is harmful. It also mentions the importance of wearing a mouthguard while playing more dangerous games as well as the importance of brushing your teeth. Use this graphic to see the average experience of a healthy tooth and use the tips provided in the graphic to keep your teeth as healthy as Cooper does.
