Fab Floss Experiment | Dental Worksheet
Dentists recommend that you brush your teeth twice a day. But did you know that you should also floss your teeth once a day as well? When you eat throughout the day, particles of food tend to get stuck between your teeth. This means that the bacteria from this particle of food also gets trapped and helps to cause cavities. It’s difficult to reach the crevices between your teeth with just a toothbrush, which makes flossing incredibly important. Follow the experiment on this dental worksheet, which can also be viewed in Spanish, to test just how effective floss is!
For this experiment, you will need a rubber glove, an old toothbrush, dental floss, a jar of smooth peanut butter, water, a spoon and a grown up to help you.
First, you should put on the rubber glove and hold your fingers apart. Have your adult helper use the spoon to spread peanut butter between the fingers of your gloved hand. After they apply the peanut butter, squeeze your fingers together. Try to remove the peanut butter with a wet old toothbrush. You won’t need toothpaste for this experiment, but when you brush your teeth every day, it’s important to remember to use toothpaste. Then, have your adult helper take some dental floss and remove the peanut butter from between your fingers. See how much floss helps with debris removal?
When you’re finished, clean up and throw away the glove. Use the results of the experiment to remind yourself how important it is to floss your teeth every day. This is key to making sure you have healthy teeth and gums.
